Live music is one of the many wonderful things to be enjoyed in Second Life. First-class performers and hard-working managers and hosts deserve our support not only to show our appreciation but also so that our enjoyment can continue.

Where else can we enjoy such excellent live music at such a small cost ? Show your Linden Love !!!

Torben Asp at The Mother Stage - Friday 25 March 2011

Later on Friday I found an absolutely brilliant concert of electronic music integrated with a particle show, created and performed by Danish composer Torben Asp.

Torben has been performing live concerts in Second Life since October 2007. He composes and arranges his own original music with many inputs from a variety of different genres in his compositions.  He wants to create pictures and set us in a certain mood instead of being the next superstar.  He likes to call it Recreative Music.

Torben composes and performs electronic music of an ambient/new age kind.  His musical inspirations are: Sash!, Darude, Jean Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, Vivaldi, Mozart and almost every other kind of good music that is around.

The Mother Stage is in the Na'vi Rainforest at Bliss.  It is high up in a giant tree and a wonderful setting for electronic music with a particle show. Torben advised us to set the light to midnight, and in addition I used the sunset setting to get some of these pictures.

His first piece Enchanting Parts 1 and 2 was inspired by the film  Avatar. There was the electronic creation of bird and animal sounds. The whole piece has symphonic qualities, at times ethereal, at times a light rock feel, with good use of percussion.

Next was his Cypress Chronicle composed as a tribute to Cypress RosewoodDuring a little walk in the forest we could almost hear words coming from the trees.  I found this piece almost celtic at times. It had the throbbing of light percussion, and flute as a tribute to Cypress.

See my post of 27 February about Cypress Rosewood.

His next piece Vivaldi was inspired by that great composer.  One can hear organ, and clarinet, a very up-tempo beat, clapping, all moving along at a fast pace and for me the influence of Jean-Michel Jarre was very strong. Torben explained that it is inspired by Vivaldi's 2nd movement of his concerto for two mandolins. It is certainly Vivaldi with a Torben twist.

Half way through there was a maximum of 12 people in the audience.  The infectious rhythms of the music impelled us to dance and be happy !!

Reflections  came next.  We were floating along ....

My pictures don't do justice to the great show of particles which were totally amazing and unlike any I've seen before in Second Life.  He uses a great variety of forms more like something from outer space than a simple fireworks display.

Then ethereal colour splashes from his album Watercolours

The electricity and energy of Recharge was transmitted into our dancing, to move with Torben's music is absolutely irresistable !!

I think the title of the next was  Whistler in the Sewer ...  and he introduced it as a tribute to the hard-working people there.

His eighth and last piece was  Just One Day

Torben's music is full of energy and words here can't do justice to it.  Even without the particle effects it is great music !!   The particle effects were an added bonus which raised his show to an even higher level of creativity and enjoyment.

I will certainly be going back to hear him again. Thank you Torben :))
